Carcass
Biography
Carcass is an English death metal band from Liverpool, a pioneer of goregrind and later melodic death metal. Founded in 1985, it brought together Jeff Walker (bass and vocals), Bill Steer (guitar) and Ken Owen (drums). Its early albums, Reek of Putrefaction (1988) and Symphonies of Sickness (1989), established a gore-soaked aesthetic and a macabre medical vocabulary that would inspire an entire subgenre. The band then moved toward a more technical and melodic style with Necroticism (1991) and especially Heartwork (1993), a landmark often cited as a blueprint for melodic death metal. Despite a 1995 split and later reunions, Carcass remains a crucial influence and one of the most admired names in British extreme metal.
