In Flames
Biography
In Flames came together in 1990 in Gothenburg, Sweden. The band ranks among the founders of melodic death metal, the celebrated Gothenburg sound that would lastingly shape the international metal scene. Initially driven by guitarist Jesper Stromblad, it refined a formula blending melodic riffs, twin guitar harmonies and guttural vocals. The arrival of singer Anders Friden and guitarist Bjorn Gelotte steadied the lineup during the 1990s. Albums such as The Jester Race (1996), Whoracle (1997), Colony (1999) and Clayman (2000) laid the foundations of the genre and inspired many groups. Across the records that followed, In Flames broadened its approach toward more accessible textures, while remaining a major reference of European metal.
