Abraham

Biography

Abraham (in Hebrew: אַבְרָהָם /av.ra.ˈham/; in Ge'ez: አብርሃም /ab.ra.ˈham/; in Arabic: إبراهيم /ib.ra.ˈhim/) is a figure in Jewish scriptures, considered by the majority of streams within them as the principal patriarch of the Jewish, Christian and Muslim religions. He is one of the central figures of the Book of Genesis. Abraham is among the first patriarchs of the Bible and is regarded as the founder of the monotheism of the "Abrahamic" tradition by Judaism, Christianity and Islam. In the Book of Genesis, his name is initially "Abram" (meaning "the Father is exalted") and later becomes "Abraham," which means "father of a multitude of nations." He is named Ibrahim in the Quran. Two biblical passages mention that Abraham is buried in Hebron, and Jewish tradition places the tomb in caves at the foot of the monument known as the Tomb of the Patriarchs.
