Adema’s self titled debut, released in 2001, arrived trailed by media curiosity, that of singer Mark Chavez, half brother of Korn’s Jonathan Davis. The Californian band sets itself apart, however, with a more melodic approach, where catchy choruses take precedence over the sheer aggression of the era’s nu metal.
Giving In and The Way You Like It, its two major singles, sum up this effective formula, heavy but legible riffs, emotional vocals and a polished production. Therein lies its limit too, writing that is at times too tame, lacking risk and grit. The album is a pleasant listen and holds real high points, but above all it illustrates a nu metal already heading toward standardization, competent without being truly memorable.
