Coliseum
Biography
The Coliseum is a complete sports complex located near downtown Amiens in Picardy. Inaugurated in 1996 at the site of the former Pierre-de-Coubertin complex, it is open to the public. It is also home to numerous Amiens sports clubs, including the Amiens Hockey Elite ice hockey team. In 1989, the Amiens city council and public services recognized the need to provide the city with a modern sports facility to replace the Pierre-de-Coubertin sports palace, which included an Olympic swimming pool and ice rink dating from the 1960s and suffering from deterioration. The project was entrusted to Pierre Parat, architect of the Paris-Bercy multipurpose palace. In 1993, during the building's foundation phase, four Gallo-Roman dwellings from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD were discovered.
