French tech-death pride: Bordeaux’s Gorod remain one of the finest technical death metal machines on the planet, and The Ember Gone proves it again. On craft, the press is unanimous: serpentine riffs, Benoit Claus’s bass counter-melodies, Julien Deyres switching between clean and harsh vocals, prog and jazz influences digested like nobody else. Angry Metal Guy (3.5/5) and The Razor’s Edge both salute a record that grows with every listen.

The real story is the emotional turn: Gorod slow down, expose their cracks, dare to be vulnerable. The Razor’s Edge calls the craft « impossible to deny »; AMG instead hears a restraint that « siphons the urgency » and ranks it below Æthra and The Orb.

The disagreements are structural: « Regret » runs too long, two slow tracks back-to-back stall the momentum late in the album. Nothing fatal — and for the French scene, watching a band of this calibre still experimenting after twenty years remains an event.
