For a French power trio on Nirvana’s old label, that’s the kind of scoreboard the scene over here gets to brag about.
What everyone agrees on: discipline. After the sprawling Ilion, SLIFT tightens into five-to-seven-minute songs, built on a concept of a wanderer seeking refuge in a hostile city — xenophobia, ecological collapse, alienation. PopMatters (8/10) calls it « a small triumph of artistic discipline », the album where « SLIFT’s many strengths have finally agreed to be in the same room ». Distorted Sound singles out « The Village » — « as perfect a five minutes as you can experience » — and praises Kurt Ballou’s mix for « a huge yet totally organic sound ».
What divides? Almost nothing, which is the striking part: no negative score in the aggregate, only degrees of enthusiasm. You could quibble that the public is slightly less levitated than the press, but the verdict is plain: the most exciting band in French heavy music just delivered its most controlled record — and planted a tricolore on Sub Pop’s roster while doing it. 8/10, no hesitation.
