The masked Portuguese built their cult on cathartic post-black metal; Loss trades it for clean choruses and near-metalcore structures — and the schism is immediate. The press goes along, at 74/100: Metal Hammer (80) calls it « a striking transformation » for the « mystique-laden black metallers », while Distorted Sound (8/10) endorses the gamble: « a huge leap of faith, but crucially they’ve stuck the landing ».
The public does not forgive: 60/100, and comment threads that reek of betrayal. Sputnikmusic (3.8/5) puts polite words on the frustration: the record « does what it sets out to do very well », but « it would’ve been nice for the black metal core of the band to shine through just a tad more ». Kerrang! (3/5), more cynical, mostly reads a career plan: Gaerea « seem set on promotion to metal’s premier league ».
That is the whole debate: ambition or calculation? What’s certain is that Loss is the record that will turn Gaerea into a big-logo festival band — and that half their original faithful will watch it from the back of the room, arms crossed under the hood.
